Marion City Schools
High School History Teacher

After 26 years of teaching, I decided to flip the teaching of my history classes. As a first year flipper (choosing to ignore all good, sound advice), I dove into the deep end head first. Year 27 of teaching has been amazing. I teach in a city high school with lots of socio-economic disadvantages (all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch). As a teacher who is always looking for ways to encourage engagement, I discovered the History Alive! Program from Teachers’ Curriculum Institute and have been using it for the past 14 years. I have learned that History Alive! and flipping are a perfect match. I have taught in a small rural school for six years and now in an urban school for 21 years. I have taught classes ranging from accelerated to dropout prevention in all the areas of social studies. Using the flipped classroom has made me a better teacher. I feel that this has been my best year of teaching in my career as I know and understand my students better than in previous years.
